Classroom Community We believe in the power of working together and learning from each other. We firmly stand by our school's core belief system of being responsible, being ready to learn, and (above all) being kinder than necessary. As teachers, we recognize when students show these attributes and use positive reinforcement as a way to encourage expected behaviors. Schedule South School runs on a 6-day schedule. Please see below for your child's specialist schedule. 1E Day 1: Computers (Week A)/ Music (Week B) Day 2: Spanish Day 3: Library Day 4: Music Day 5: Gym Day 6: Art 1L Day 1: Spanish Day 2: Library Day 3: Gym Day 4: Art Day 5: Music Day 6: Computers (Week A)/ Music (Week B) 1M Day 1: Art Day 2: Gym (sneakers needed for Gym days) Day 3: Music Day 4: Library Day 5: Spanish Day 6: Music (Week A)/ Computers (Week B) 1WO Day 1: Music (Week A)/ Computers (Week B) Day 2: Music Day 3: Art Day 4: Gym Day 5: Library Day 6: Spanish
Recess/Lunch First graders have two recesses each day. Grade 1 has morning recess and snack* at 10:30. Second recess and lunch are from 12:35-1:15pm. If you child will be buying lunch, it is recommended that you use the Point of Sale System (www.parentonline.net). It is often difficult for children to handle money from the classroom to the lunchroom successfully. The lunch schedule is sent home monthly, but can be checked online through the Hingham Public Schools website. Lunch costs $3.00Milk or fruit may be purchased separately and costs $0.50 each.Water may be purchased separately for $0.75 . *First graders should also bring in a small, healthy snack and drink each day for morning snack.
Birthday Celebrations If your child would like to celebrate his or her birthday, you are welcome to come in and read a story, or just send in a special story for the teacher to read to the class. Please email your child's teacher, or send in a note, to let us know ahead of time if you would like to do this. *We will not be celebrating birthdays with food, and we ask that you please do not bring in any food for your child’s birthday. Thank you!
Homework Most Fridays your child will bring home his/her homework packet. The packet will have the following week’s homework. The packet will include: Cover page: This page will instruct you on what to do each night. Spelling List: Spelling tests are given most Fridays. There will also be activities for the children to do to help them practice their spelling words. Math Home Links: Home Links are math practice worksheets that reinforce skills taught in class. There will not be a Home Link paper for every night (please see cover page for which nights to complete each page). Please also routinely practice math facts. Worksheets should be returned to school on Friday. Story: These short stories should be read at least three times over the course of the week. The story will reinforce the phonics skills and vocabulary that we are working on in the classroom that week. The stories also give your child a chance to practice his/her fluency skills. In addition, please make reading with your child part of your daily routine.
